Liam walked down the cement ramp connecting to a slew of docks in Midnight Harbour. He was not expecting this at all. He had only just gotten a call from his father a few weeks ago about the activation of a new slayer in Midnight Harbour. Now, he had just recently gotten a call from Nikolas, Ana’s father back in England who had instructed him to meet him at the docks tonight. Why? Liam had no clue, and Nikolas wasn’t too open with the details. But that was just like Nikolas. Him being a man of unpredictability, anything that he arranged or did was a surprise of sorts. Liam was just a bit anxious about what he was in for tonight. It could be anything. Even if it was dire news about his family in England, Nikolas wouldn’t tell Liam anything until they were face to face which was what was worrying him. He hadn’t heard anything from his father since Richard Keller first called him about the slayer. It could easily be something to do with his family. Liam hoped more than anything it wasn’t something serious. But if it wasn’t, why would Nikolas come all the way to the United States for this?
Liam could feel the water hitting the bottom of the wooden docks as he walked across them his hands digging into the bottoms of his long black trench which was covering his dark blue jeans and rather form fitting gray t-shirt. It was actually a bit chilly tonight compared to other nights in Midnight Harbour. Perhaps it was the breeze coming off of the water. He hoped he could find Nikolas soon. Knowing him, he was probably peering out from behind something first to make sure the coast was clear. But it didn’t even seem like anyone was even around tonight. The docks were empty except for a few larger boats underneath the few spotlights and a girl sitting on a bench. Wait….what? Liam scanned the area he thought he saw the girl, and sure enough, he wasn’t at all dreaming. There she sat on the bench a bit further ahead of him. Her long dark hair falling over her shoulders in loose waves and her rather bright clothing were the only things he could make out of this woman. What was she thinking? Did she want to be vampire food tonight?
Liam decided that since Nikolas was nowhere in sight, he should probably go investigate. Who knew, maybe she was a vampire in disguise. He’d come across more of those in this town than any so far. Vampires would lure people in and take advantage of the people who were just nice enough to help someone in need. He really hoped if that was the case that she didn’t have her lackies hiding in the shadows. Liam approached her cautiously his stake and cross ready in his back pockes. ”You know, it’s probably not the best idea to be sitting out here all by your lonesome luv. Can I help you with something?” Liam asked as he stopped a few feet away from her. He squinted his eyes to try and make out her face.

she had been sitting along for about ten minutes before she heard the sound of approaching footsteps on the dock. it was easy to hear them because they echoed against the wood. plus the person wasn't exactly walking quietly. she tilted her head slightly to confirm that it was the person she was waiting for and then turned her head back to where it had been before. he would approach her soon enough. knowing liam, he would think she was a damsel in distress. ana knew that liam was a lady's man of sorts. sure it bothered her when she really thought about it, made her jealous that other women were with him, but it had been ten years since she had seen him so she couldn't really judge.
sure enough he approached her and she heard the familiar accent tell her that it wasn't safe for her to be out alone at night and then ask her if she needed any help. she let out a small laugh and without turning towards him said, in her own accented voice, "Well you sure haven't changed much, always a sucker for the damsel in distress." then ana stood up from the bench and turned to look at liam. he was tall, taller than she remembered. his face seemed older, a little harder. but he was the same liam that she had been friends with. same brown hair, same eyes. the eyes, they were the dead give away that this was indeed liam. "Long time no see, 'luv'" she said with a small smirk at him.
this is one time that she was honestly happy about something her father had done. sending her here was the greatest gift he could have given her. ana doubted that her father knew just how much being sent here had meant to her. her father didn't know about the connection that her and liam had shared, the same connection that ana hoped they still had. she put her hand on her hip and just smiled at him. she figured it wouldn't take him too much longer to realize that he hadn't been called here to meet with nikolas but rather with his daughter instead.

It had only taken that small sweet laugh that escaped her mouth for Liam to know exactly who this young woman was, and she wasn't a stranger at all to him. The long dark cascading hair. The even darker brown eyes with a slight glint of happiness in them. The slim and petit figure full of life. Liam smiled to himself when her voice cracked through the silence of the air around him. Ten years....ten whole years since he'd seen that olive cream colored skin. Since he'd said goodbye to her and left her behind in England with the rest of the authority figures that they would so often try to work around. Since he'd almost kissed her in a very intense moment of farewell, emotion for each other they had never really experienced before. But as much as that moment still played over and over and over again in his mind, he wanted to push it out just long enough to look at her again. To hold her. To laugh with her. To have his best friend back. "Only when the damsel is you....Ana."
And with that, Ana stood up walking towards him closing in the distance between the two of them. Why did he feel so strange? He knew Ana had changed in appearance. That was obvious. She was taller and actually had....well she was much more mature. But what if that wasn't the only change that she had gone through. After all, it had been ten years since they'd seen each other. Things could have changed. At the moment, to Liam it felt like nothing had changed. Yes, he was older and was living on his own and away from the council for the first time in his life, but it didn't change the memories that they had shared. Was it similar for Ana? Liam wanted more than anything to just wrap his arms around her and hold her taking in the wonderful feeling of this surprise....but all he could do was hesitate....stand there and freakin' hesitate. Hesitate to the point that it was too late to bounce back and just do what he had the urge to do in the first place. So, he gave her a soft smile with a nod. "It's good to see you Ana. Its....its definitely been too long. You look....radiant," Liam chuckled, "even in the dim light of the docks of this dead town."

it didn't take more than a moment for liam to realize who he was standing in front of right now. ana smiled brightly when he commented that she was the only damsel in distress that drew his attention. it was weird, but it seemed like that statement was a flirtatious one. maybe it was because they were older now and things weren't the same as they had been when they were kids. words meant more now than they had before and words had the potential to mean so much more now. "Well, I guess it is a shame that I don't act the part of a damsel very well then" she replied with a coy smile. she looked up at him, seeing as he was taller than her.
he spoke about how it was great to see her and then complimented her, saying how she was radiant despite the darkness of the docks. she felt a light blush cover her cheeks. she never blushed around liam, something was different. "Thanks, you are so full of compliments tonight" she laughed. this meeting was happy, exciting and also a little awkward. why were things awkward? she saw a mixture of emotions go across his face, like he wanted to do something but wasn't sure if he should. she decided to step forward and toss her arms around his neck. they were friends after all, best friends. this shouldn't be an awkward moment. "I missed you so much!" she said and then broke the hug with a smile.
she really had missed him. life just wasn't the same without him in it. she wondered if he was still the same liam that had left her behind in england. "So, tell me what you have been up to for the last ten years? We have so much catching up to do" she exclaimed with a broad smile. her eyes were practically sparkling with the excitement of being around liam again. ten long years spent waiting for this moment and it was pretty much everything she had hoped it would be. liam looked happy to see her and that was enough for her. she wondered if he had somebody, if there was somebody that she was going to have to be jealous of. she would be jealous, that was something she had realized long ago. she had never been able to hold a boyfriend for long after liam had left mainly because none of the guys she had dated were liam. but she was too shy to admit her feelings for him. she didn't want to ruin their friendship.

Liam chuckled when she mentioned that he was full of compliments. He normally was actually....with women he was trying to sleep with which was not at all what he was trying to do with Ana. With Ana, there were no ulterior motives. What he said to her he meant. What he said to her he actually wanted to say. But of course he wasn't going to say any of that truth to her. His eyes met hers with a slight grin. "Don't get used to it now."
Liam did not expect what happened next. Ana stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck. Obviously that strange feeling that washed over Liam causing him to hesitate was no where in Ana's mind. But he could no longer hesitate. Her body was close to his, and as if on instinct, he pulled her closer to him with his own arms embracing her. Her familiar scent filled his nostrils allowing other familiar things about Ana to fill his mind. He remembered the time they had gone skinny dipping in the Walbrook River at 1am or the amount of hours they spent wrestling with each other in Ana's backyard when their fathers both told them to practice their fighting moves or even the moments they would share staying up all night watching cheesy horror movies and laughing at how the world viewed the forces of darkness. All of it came back to Liam along with Ana's own words about missing him. He closed his eyes and sighed softly as the awkwardness left him for a few moments.
When Ana pulled away, Liam didn't want to let her go, but he did stepping back slightly. "Oh what have I NOT been up to!? I've traveled all over the United States. Slept with every las I could find willing and i'll tell ya there are a lot of 'em. Even got myself a job as a lawyer just living a normal life as an American citizen." He nodded with a smile. Clearly none of that was true, and he knew Ana would catch onto his stupid attempt at cheesy sarcasm. "Nah, nothing much really. Lived in Wyoming for a bit. Defied dad's orders. Went to uni for Microbiology. Dad made me go back and do administration. Holden moved in with me. Got called to be the watcher. Moved here. And now Holden is going to school at Midnight Harbour High and I....I'm their guidance counselor, and I swear if you say anything I will end you." He laughed knowing Ana would probably have a lot of witty comments about him counseling adolescents. He shrugged. "Other than that, nothing really. How about you? You must have a bunch of blokes fancying you, huh? And what is Nikolas making you do with your life now?" It wasn't that he was being mean at all. They both knew how powerful their parents were and what growing up with them was like. It was strict and you had to live up to their expectations. It had completely slipped his mind that Nikolas was the one that had called him and asked him to meet him here. "Speaking of good 'ol Nik, where is he? Thought he was supposed to meet me here. Not that seeing you again isn't a very pleasing surprise."

ana missed the feeling of hugging liam almost instantly after she pulled away. but she figured it would seem a little strange if she just stood there and hugged him forever. she found that she loved the feeling of his arms wrapping around her. it was comforting, safe. his musky scent still danced around in her nostrils, a scent that she had remembered from ten years ago. she gave a small laugh when he told her not to get used to him complimenting her. that wasn't the truth though, he always had compliments for her, he always had. liam and her had that special kind of friendship that was practically unbreakable but it was starting to lean towards something more, something different.
ana listened to him joke around about what he had done in the states so far. trying to make it sound like some cheesy movie instead of the reality. she and him had always made fun of cheesy movies, not matte the genre. "Sounds like you got the American dream" she replied with a joking smile and then continued to listen to what he had actually been up to during his stay in the states. she wasn't surprised that he had gone against his dad's wishes, they both got sick and tired of being controlled really quickly. "Sounds like you have been insanely busy. It is pretty ridiculous that even with thousands of miles between the two of you, your father can still control your life. Are we ever going to outgrow that control?" she asked with a sigh and an exaggerated eye roll. the fact that they had similar fathers had been something that they had connected over as children. "Ahh so Holden is here too. I haven't seen him since he was a young lad" she exclaimed with a smile. holden was younger than her which was refreshing since liam was older.
when liam asked about her, about potential suitors and about her father she made a face and then said "Well you know my father, he has to be in complete control of every aspect of my life or else his head will implode. I wouldn't say I have been up to anything too interesting though. I am going to school to become a lawyer ironically...father thinks it will be a good job for me. I hate it so much, but I can't really tell him that. As for blokes fancying me, there are plenty of those. Father is always scoping out the "good" ones and sending them my way. He wants me to marry someone well off and well known. I am so not interested. Tried dating a couple of times, needless to say no one can hold my interest." she felt like she was babbling but really she just had a lot to say. she didn't tell liam why no one could hold her interest though.
"You know guys, since you are one, all they want is one thing and then they are gone" she replied with a shrug. she was still a virgin, had never wanted to sleep with anyone because she actually believed in sleeping with someone you care about. she wanted to make liam wonder though, to see his face when he thought about the fact that in the last ten years she could have been with someone else. she knew that he had been with plenty of girls, so now it was time to find out how he would take it if she had been with a bunch of guys. ana was all about making liam squirm, sure it was mean but that is what friends are for.

Liam chuckled. "Oh definitely. And how dream-like it really is." He shook his head glancing at her his lips still forming a smirk. "Clearly the meaning of the American Dream in England has taken yet another turn. I'm assuming it is more sarcastic now than it used to be." It wasn't a question at all because he already knew the answer. Liam grew up wanting to explore the world far far away from the council, America being that place, a place where a district of the council did not exist. The American Dream to him was to get away from it all for some time. He never did get away from it. It just seemed to catch up with him eventually. And the mention of his father just solidified the fact that he really was never going to get away from it. He was forever and always dedicated to the council....to his destiny regardless of if he wanted to be or not. Liam sighed as well because what else could he do? She was right. It was never going to go away. "I don't think we are. It was always easier though when we dealt with it together." He found himself lifting his eyes to hers. When Liam was back in England with Ana, they never had to deal with the control of the council on their own because they always had each other. It was different now though more so with Ana who had to deal with it probably more on her own back in England for the last 10 years.
"Don't worry," Liam snickered, "you really aren't missing anything there. He is still a young lad. Immature, annoying little wanker....just a bit taller." Liam listened to her explain her own craziness over the past 10 years. It was vague, but what else was there to say? He knew what her father would do to pull Ana wherever he wanted to, and it was because Liam had the same exact type of relationship with his father. But for some reason, Liam had more interest in the idea that she wasn't seeing someone and seemed to be uninterested in any advances that were made towards her.
"What?!" Liam dropped his jaw in awe at her last comment. "That is a bunch of rubbish! We are not at all like that. I have no idea what on earth you are talking about!" He said sarcastically, but he couldn't help but wonder if something specific had happened to make her come to that conclusion. Was she just cracking jokes about the many girls Liam would sleep with back when the girls would come crying to Ana, his closest friend? Or had she slept with some of those guys she had "tried" dating? Did they use her and then leave her behind like a toy? It was actually unsettling to think about.
Liam cleared his throat trying to hide his obvious interest further into the issue. "So, what brings you here Ana? Surely you didn't come here just to see my gorgeous face." He smirked.

it was sad really. the way that liam and ana had very little control over their own lives. they were both being pulled in directions that they didn't want to go. liam was being forced into being a watcher while ana was being forced into being a lawyer. ana wanted to be a watcher though. she had always wanted to be one. to understand what liam was going through, what he was working towards. but no, it wasn't proper for her. "It was definitely easier when we could mope and complain about it together. The last ten years have been rather empty honestly" she replied and then decided to take this moment to act like the girl she was and be mushy "You took a part of me with you when you left, a big part that no one else can fill in" she added with a smile. he had always possessed a large part of her heart and that part had never left him. even if he didn't realize it, he had been carrying a piece of her with him for the last ten years.
she snickered when he talked about holden. the boy had always been the little pain in the ass type of little brother. that younger sibling that you always try to ditch and hide from. ana couldn't remember how many times they had hidden in their favorite tree just to get away from the little bugger. "Do you remember that huge oak we used to hide in so that Holden couldn't find us? He would get so mad and go and tell on us. Man I miss the times when the world wasn't so harsh and things didn't matter so much. When we could just be kids and not worry about what other people wanted from us" she sighed. the world was a lot harder now. it wasn't as forgiving as it had seemed to be when they were children. she remembered things being simple, easy, but not anymore. everything was all work and no play. well all work and no play makes ana an unhappy girl.
she had to stifle her laughter when he pretended to be offended by what she had said. but she knew him well enough to tell that this was merely a cover up for the fact that he was actually wondering what she might have been up to the last ten years. it was exactly the reaction she had wanted. "Oh of course not. I must be mistaken" she laughed and then let the subject end there. why not let him squirm for a little while, let the wonder eat away at him. she couldn't even count how many girls had come crying to her when he had broken their hearts. she just wasn't that kind of girl. she wasn't about to let some bloke break her heart and walk away. she just avoided the whole love situation all together, except when it came to liam. she couldn't admit to herself yet that she loved him, that she had always loved him. maybe someday she would. maybe he would feel the same. she didn't know.
"Ahh, down to business now. Fun is over" she replied with a sarcastic roll of her eyes and then added "I was actually sent here. I guess the council decided that you needed checking up on. My father wasn't entirely pleased but he actually allowed me to go, huge surprise there. I am supposed to see how things are going, how your work is progressing, all that bull crap and then report back to them. I wish this was merely a social call but when is anything ever a social call when it comes to the council. Seeing your gorgeous face was just a bonus" she winked as she said that last part of her statement.

He may not have had the guts to come right out and say it, but Ana did. There were those very few moments where Ana would share the emotions that Liam knew she buried deep down within herself masked by the false pride she would carry as Anastasia Vatican, the daughter of Nikolas Vatican. Those moments were present when she was just....Ana. The real, Ana. The Ana that Liam grew to care so much about. And as mushy as those moments were sometimes, they meant quite a lot to Liam. But reciprocating those emotions or even making them known for a split second could change everything, and Liam just wasn't sure if he could accept that just yet. Of course to mask his own emotions, Liam reverted back to his old witty comments. "Hmm, i'm fairly certain I took a few parts. Just the good ones though." His eyes scanned her up and down making sure to lock on hers last to send a flirty wink her way. Why couldn't he just come right out and tell her that he felt the same way? It was easier said than done. It really was. Even a simple 'the feeling is mutual Ana' was too much for him to handle apparently.
Liam laughed rather loudly as images of the actual oak tree that they would hide in filled his mind bringing him back to the very pleasant memories of the three of them just being stupid together. "It isn't hard for someone to recall a tree they fell out of or rather slipped out of because of distractions. I broke my arm that day! Father was livid when he rushed me to the emergency room. I couldn't see you for a week after that incident! I swear I was truly dying inside!" It was the truth. He was absolutely bored out of his mind when he was grounded from Ana for a week. He had nothing to do. The excitement for just about everything was gone because he didn't have that one person to share it with. As he was brought back to these memories, he wondered what other interesting things they could get into now that she had come to visit and she was much older. Maybe having Ana around again would take his mind off the intense process of finding his slayer.
Liam smirked at her. "How can the fun be over just yet?" He stepped closer to her lifting his arms out as if she were an officer of the law who had to search him for illegal possessions. "You haven't even thoroughly checked up on me yet, Ana Banana." He loved messing with her. It was a way for him to express those emotions that he had for her without coming right out and telling her exactly how he felt. It was a way to let her interpret him the way she wanted to because he was too unsure of himself to actually do so. But did she take his flirtation seriously? With them it was never just one sided. If Liam started anything, Ana was always there to pick it right back up. Did it mean anything to her? Clearly it had to because of what she had said earlier about him taking a part of her with him when he left. But that could be interpreted in so many ways. Liam dropped his arms and watched her cocking his head slightly to the side. His smile had faded, and now he wanted to say something to her more than anything....but how? He felt guilty for leaving her behind to fend for herself. "I'm sorry I left like I did. You know that if I had a choice I would have stayed in England....with you." Liam was silent for a few seconds his eyes still looking down at hers. He finally shrugged slightly. "But like you said, i'm thousands and thousands of miles away right now, yet father is still sending the infamous Anastasia Vatican to "check up" on my progress. Well, you can tell him that there is no progress. The progress has been halted completely. I have yet to find that damn slayer. And make sure when you do report back to him, repeat my words as harshly as possible. The emphasis is important, and it gives me pleasure to see him peeved."

when liam stated that he had taken only a few parts of her and only the good parts. she smirked at him and then stuck her tongue out before replying with "Psh then you must not have taken much because I am still full of complete and utter awesomeness!" she rolled her eyes as she watched him scan her up and down and then lock on her eyes before giving her a playful wink. he was such a jerk sometimes, especially when it came to talking about anything that was serious or emotional. "Like what you see?" she replied with a playful wink back at him. she did love teasing him though and she knew that he tended to display his emotions through jesting and jokes.
ana laughed as liam retold the tale of when he had fallen out of that same tree that they loved. "I almost forgot about that. Didn't you get distracted by some girls that were swimming in the water hole, which if I recall was only visible from that particular oak tree" she replied with a laugh. "You were always getting distracted by all the pretty girls" she added and then in her own mind she said, but you weren't distracted by me. she would never say that though. ana held quite a bit of jealousy in her mind from when they were kids. liam always noticed everyone else but never seemed to notice her, even when she tried to get him to.
as liam stepped forward and threw his arms out away from his body as if she was going to do a body search on him she chuckled and said "Well I may have to do a full body cavity search, make sure you aren't hiding anything from me Mr. Keller" making her voice sound all professional and serious and trying to keep a straight face. her and liam were two peas in a pod, just like they had always been. they could probably finish each other's sentences. they had always joked around with each other and that would probably never change. but there were parts of ana that wished that they could be serious with each other sometimes. serious about what they could have. she knew that liam must like her as more than a friend if he had still held onto her for the last ten years as she had held on to him.
when he apologized for leaving her behind in england she frowned a little and then shook her head "No, don't be sorry. I know that you had to go. It wasn't a choice and I don't hold any grudges against you for that. I wish you could have stayed but your destiny was to leave" she replied softly. this was probably one of the most serious things that liam had ever said to her. it sort of made her really think that he cared for her as more than a friend. she then listened intently as he told her that they was nothing to report back, that there was no news. she took a step back and and threw her hands up in the air like she was innocent and responded with "Hey, hey now, don't kill the messenger" she replied with a small laugh. "Besides whether there is something to report back or not I am just happy to be here" she added.

It was too difficult to focus on anything Ana was saying really now that he discovered the real reason behind her surprise appearance. Just discussing his father made his mood change from content to downright pissed off. He hadn’t seen his father in ten years, and how did he finally make contact more than a phone call here and there? Through Ana….to come and check-up on him! Not to ask about Holden and his new school. Not to ask about Liam and his new job. Nothing. It was all about the destiny. It was of course expected, so Liam didn’t understand why he still seemed surprised at his father’s actions. Liam sighed turning away from her. The last thing he wanted to do was take out his frustration on Ana. Maybe he was pissed because he knew that his father would be disappointed with him. How did he know that? Because he was disappointed with himself. He had been in Midnight Harbour for a week and a half with Holden, and there was absolutely no sign of his slayer anywhere.
Liam moved past Ana to plop down onto the wooden bench. ”Yeah I know, I know. If the messenger was someone else I might have gone to get my shotgun.” He chuckled as he shoved his hands into his jacket pockets. ”But even if you are just here to report back to good ‘ol Mr. Keller, I’m glad that you were the one to visit. You’re always nice to look at…I mean catch up with.” Liam flashed a grin her way. He was obviously referring back to the first question she had asked him about liking what he saw. Of course he liked what he saw. It was Ana. And after ten years, her body was much more interesting to look at then it had been.
”So, since I haven’t found the slayer yet, you can’t really report back to my father just yet. That would be horrendously embarrassing I’d think. So, I’m thinking the best course of action is for you to just stay with Holden and I for a bit until the slayer is found.” He waited for a response. He knew he had snapped at her about why she was here, and she didn’t deserve any of that. The least he could do was make up for that. He hadn’t seen her in ten years. The last thing he wanted to do was be more of an ass hole than he normally was. ”Don’t worry. We have an extra room.”
